In a democratic country with a presidential system of government, the president is elected by the people and serves as the head of state and head of government. The president is responsible for enforcing the laws of the country, negotiating with other countries, and representing the country on the international stage. The president also has the authority to veto or sign bills into law and to appoint judges and other government officials.

In some organizations, such as a university or a corporation, the president is the highest-ranking executive officer and is responsible for making strategic decisions, managing resources, and overseeing the work of other executives.

Overall, the role of a president is to lead and represent the country or organization they are in charge of and to make important decisions that will shape its future.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the current president of Ghana. He was elected in 2017 and has served since then. He was re-elected in 2020 and will be in office until 6 January 2025. Akufo-Addo’s family was influential in Ghana’s struggle for independence. His father served as a ceremonial president from 1970 to 1972.

Ghana has had a total of eight presidents since it gained independence from Britain in 1957. Here is a list of Ghana’s presidents in chronological order:

  2. Joseph Boakye Danquah (J.B Danquah)
  3. Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka
  4. Edward Akufo-Addo (Member of Big Six)
  5. Hilla Limann
  6. Jerry John Rawlings (1993-2001)
  7. John Agyekum Kufuor (2001-2009)
  8. John Dramani Mahama (2009-2017)
  9. Nana Akufo-Addo (2017-present)

Kwame Nkrumah is often considered the founding father of Ghana, as he played a key role in the country’s independence movement and served as its first president.

The “Big Six” that led Ghana to independence in 1957 include:

Kwame Nkrumah (1909 – 1972)
Emmanuel Odarkwei Obetsebi Lamptey (1902 – 1963)
William Ofori Atta (1910 – 1988)
Edward Akufo-Addo (1906 – 1979)
Ebenezer Ako Adjei (1916 – 2002)
Joseph Boakye Danquah (1895 – 1965)
