Incomplete Leader: One of the things I have seen leaders struggle with is, not settling with their incomplete nature. Incomplete in this context means, not been able to be/do everything in your team as the head and of course, you can’t be everything in your team and you can’t do everything.

Few weeks ago, I read a Harvard Business Review on the topic, “In Praise of an Incomplete Leader” and one of the key things they said is this, “Leaders can’t appreciate their team members until they come to appreciate their gifts” and that was a powerful statement.
.
So, here is the real deal, in order for you to appreciate the gifts of your team members as a leader, you need to first of all settle down and be okay with your incomplete nature because, until you do so, you won’t give people platform to express what they have in them and when they can’t express themselves/gifts, they will simply allow you to do your show. This is when leadership becomes a show and no longer an avenue for influence.

As a leader, you need to learn how to delegate duties that are not meant for you. Don’t derive joy in being the only person shining in your team, you will struggle with leadership and influence. Don’t be the head, the assistant, the middle person and everything, know what you can do and be competent at it and then, allow others to explore their expertise.
.
In leadership, be okay with being incomplete as a leader and allow your team members to complement you. Leadership is most effective and results oriented when everyone is shining in their gifts, experiences and expertise, and not when one person positions like a demigod.
.
This is one of the problems people suffer in leadership. Understand that you can’t be everything. No one can be. We all have our areas of blindness and be okay with it. In your niche, be a voice there, dominate there and others should do same. Even if you have all the experiences and technical knowhow, give others room. You will be a failure in leadership when you do otherwise, and you don’t want such.

So, this new month or any other month, reevaluate yourself and know if you are a victim of this. Maybe that’s what is ruining your ability to influence your team, but you are still busy blaming them whereas it is your ignorance. Reevaluate yourself, that may be a good place to start. You got the gist, right?
.
It is simple, be okay not being everything and not knowing how to do everything. It will be a great month for you. Rule, you are a King.
