The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana is warning of a crisis if government does not ramp up education on the E-Levy for the general public.
Despite attempts by the Finance Ministry, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the media at raising awareness about the E-Levy, it appears more needs to be done.
Checks by Citi Business News in parts of Accra revealed that panic withdrawals ahead of the implementation of the electronic transfer levy had left some mobile money agents short on cash and worried.
Speaking to Citi Business News after the first day of the E-Levy’s implementation, the General Secretary of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, Evans Otumfuo charged government to rope in stakeholders like the agents to disseminate accurate information about the levy.
“It is proper that government collaborates with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that we drive home education. Can you imagine that since this whole E-Levy thing we have not seen any action from government to engage the agents for the agents to also transfer the same understanding to the consumer ? This is because we deal with the consumer on a daily basis, and if we are well informed it becomes easier for government to educate Ghanaians.”
